Our Story: Family-Owned Wimberley Boutique Lodging | Gaines Ranch
A family-owned boutique stay rooted in ranch heritage, thoughtful design, and a deep love for downtown Wimberley.
Our Story
Oklahoma roots. Wimberley home. Family-run.
Gaines Ranch on the Square started as a long drive.
For more than fifty years, the original Gaines Ranch was Pat and Kristie Gaines's family homestead in Waurika, Oklahoma. When their daughter Shelli moved her family to Wimberley, Pat and Kristie became regulars — booking a cabin at Cabins on the Square, then owned by the Sheffields, every chance they got. They fell hard for the town's pace, its creative streak, and the way everyone seemed to know everyone.
In 2017, the Sheffields decided to sell. Pat and Kristie bought Cabins on the Square — and just like that, a Wimberley side trip became a Wimberley business. Shelli, with a background in design and real estate, took on the look and feel. The cabins got refreshed without losing what guests already loved.
Then they made it official: Pat and Kristie left Waurika and relocated to Wimberley full-time.
In 2025, a long-held idea became Gaines Ranch on the Square — five newly built boutique suites and a courtyard, right on Wimberley Square. The name honors the Oklahoma homestead. The design honors the town.
A short walk from the front door, the family also owns Henson Square — a small boutique plaza off the main Square, home to Jaclynn Renée Wine Collective, Wildflower, Texaholic, and Nightbird, with regular live music in the courtyard. The properties were always meant to work together: stay on the Square, shop on the Square, sip on the Square.
Everything here is family-owned and hands-on. No corporate parent, no franchise. Pat, Kristie, Shelli, and the rest of the family are the ones answering the phone, picking out the linens, and walking through every suite before you arrive.
We hope you'll come stay.
